The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York

Jessica and John Lottbrein of West Seneca, already proud parents of two young daughters, were stunned to learn during an ultrasound that they were expecting quintuplets — a rare and high-risk pregnancy.

Despite initial shock and anxiety, the couple embraced their unexpected journey, relying on strong support from each other and the expert teams at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

Quintuplets have only been born once before in Buffalo’s history, making the event truly exceptional according to Dr. Valerie Elberson, associate medical director of the NICU.

Months of meticulous planning culminated in a late-night delivery involving over 30 specialists.

Holly, Mason, Stefan, Connor, and Layla arrived healthy but tiny, and now continue to grow stronger in the NICU.

Family and doctors are optimistic, expecting all five siblings to come home soon as their remarkable story brings hope and inspiration to the local community.

Watson’s Chocolates, a beloved Buffalo institution since 1946, marked its 80th anniversary by embracing its oldest patrons in a heartfelt celebration.

Customers aged 80 and above were invited to share cherished memories, receiving personalized Valentine’s chocolate hearts in return.

Watson’s humble beginnings as a restaurant soon gave way to its evolution into a celebrated chocolatier, now known for its handcrafted confections.

Generations of stories surfaced during the anniversary event, from childhood mischief—like carving names into booths—to fateful meetings and lifelong romances.

Many recounted proposals, first dates, and enduring family traditions, all tied to Watson’s legendary sweets.

Andrew Beecher of the Watson family highlighted that the shop’s essence lies in traditions, milestones, and community bonds, making customers and staff alike feel like family.

With eight locations across Western New York, Watson’s remains dedicated to creating sweet new memories for generations.

The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine will once again open its doors for the 25th annual ‘Give Kids A Smile’ event, offering free dental care to local children on February 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at UB’s South Campus.

Youngsters will receive dental checkups, X-rays, fluoride treatments, and cleanings, all provided by skilled faculty and students.

This effort, sponsored by the American Dental Association, launches National Children’s Dental Health Month and focuses on both prevention and hands-on education.

Interactive lessons—like brushing with puppets and flossing demos with Play-Doh—make learning fun and memorable.

Children with parents present can stay for free fillings or extractions in the afternoon.

With activities, entertainment, and a free lunch, the event continues its tradition of supporting children’s oral health and smiles in Western New York.
